Aged care provides support for older people to help them with everyday living needs. It covers services in a range of settings, including:
- aged-care facilities
- retirement homes
- in-home care.
The aged-care sector is a large portion of Queensland's services sector and broader economy. Demand for these services continue to grow as the population ages more.
Workforce challenges in the aged-care industry
Queensland’s population is ageing. The portion of people aged 65 and over grew 3 times faster than the rest of the population over the past decade.
Another challenge is the aged-care workforce itself is ageing. This will require new workers to replace workers that retire as well as filling new roles.
Aged care is a large and diverse industry. It includes activities such as:
- personal care
- food preparation
- transportation
- physiotherapy
- home modification
- health care.
