The Anticipating Future Skills (AFS) Series is an ongoing body of work by Jobs Queensland providing detailed employment projections for Queensland by region, industry, occupation and qualification level.
Before the annual public AFS release, industry experts are invited to provide their insights on the evidence base it provides through an annual industry roundtable. This roundtable is part of a departmental program of industry engagement to ensure we design the skills and training system that meets the needs of the community and industry.
AFS methodology
AFS is developed using the Victoria University Employment Forecasting (VUEF) model. The model incorporates a variety of inputs at the time of modelling, including:
- labour market statistics
- education data
- macroeconomic
- demographic data
- the most recent Queensland Treasury employment forecasts.
AFS projections indicate how jobs are expected to be distributed across industries and occupations under current conditions, shaped by population and workforce participation rates. The projections are based on a combination of historical workforce trends, current employment data and economic forecasts.
Industry-level growth projections are a guide only, reflecting point in time inputs, that may not account for future planned activity or changes to the economic or fiscal environment. Given the uncertainty of long-term figures, it is more practical to focus on overall trends and shifts than on exact figures.
