For Year 12 Pioneer State High School student Tiani Paranthoiene, vocational education has opened the door to a future she is passionate about.
A proud participant in the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), Tiani has embraced every opportunity to develop the practical skills, confidence and industry knowledge needed to pursue her dream of becoming a Heavy Diesel Fitter.
Her commitment was recognised this year when she was named runner-up in the Exceptional QMEA Female Student category at the Resources Awards for Women.
"My interest in pursuing a trade career started from enjoying hands-on work and learning how machinery and equipment operate," Tiani said.
"I have always enjoyed practical tasks, problem-solving and working with tools, which led me to explore careers in the trades industry."
Through QMEA, Tiani has been exposed to numerous initiatives that have helped shape her career aspirations while connecting her with employers and professionals across Queensland's resources sector.
"QMEA provided me with opportunities to attend camps, industry events and career activities that gave me a better understanding of different trade pathways," she said.
"Through these experiences, I learned about the resources sector, met industry professionals and gained insight into what employers are looking for in apprentices and future workers."
Along the way, Tiani has built valuable workplace skills including teamwork, communication, problem-solving and professionalism, qualities that will support her transition from school into an apprenticeship.
Now serving as a QMEA Ambassador for 2026, the Mackay student hopes her experience will encourage other young Queenslanders to consider vocational education.
"The advice I would give other young people who are considering a trade or vocational education pathway is try as many different opportunities as possible," Tiani said.
"You may not enjoy one activity or career path, but you could discover something you really enjoy through the next experience."
