In the Townsville suburb of Burdell, The Real Burger Co. has built a loyal customer base for its quality burgers and friendly service. Behind the successful business is an inspiring story of resilience, growth and transformation — supported by the Queensland Government’s Industry Workforce Advisor (IWA) program.

Business owner Bridget Contarino launched The Real Burger Co. with a vision to create a welcoming local business built on great food and service. But as the business grew, so did the pressures of managing staff, operations and family life.

“I was working tirelessly but often doubted my value to the business,” Bridget admitted. “It was hard to let go and trust others with something I cared so deeply about.”

Recognising she needed support, Bridget connected with the Industry Workforce Advisor program, and was introduced Bridget to Victoria Hansen, from the Australian Retail Council.

Working closely with Bridget, Victoria helped identify workforce challenges, staff turnover issues and opportunities to improve business operations, develop a tailored workforce plan and connect with funding and support services.

With the right support in place, Bridget focused on building a positive workplace culture and strengthening her team. The business introduced improved HR systems, created opportunities to upskill staff and restructured operations to improve efficiency. A new supervisory role was also introduced, bringing greater stability to the business.

"Initially, it was hard to step back, let go, and trust others with something so close to my heart," Bridget said.

"This experience gave me the chance to finally look after myself," Bridget reflects. "I changed the menu, made some tough but strategic decisions, and most importantly, built a great team I can trust."

Today, The Real Burger Co. has a more engaged workforce, improved profitability and the operational stability needed to support future expansion.
