From the heart of Mount Isa to powering communities across North Queensland, Stephen Cunningham’s apprenticeship journey shows just how big an impact a trade career can have.

He stands beside machinery on the back of a utility truck Before starting his apprenticeship, Stephen worked in hospitality, but he was ready for a career that supported his interests. His apprenticeship with Energy Queensland opened doors he never imagined, leading him into the highly skilled world of electrical distribution with Ergon Energy, where he works to keep communities connected.

Through his Certificate III in Electric Supply Industry – Distribution Overhead, Stephen developed specialised technical skills alongside strong leadership and communication abilities. These skills were put to the test when he supported recovery efforts following Cyclone Jasper, helping restore essential power services when communities needed them most. It was a powerful reminder that tradespeople make a real difference.

Stephen’s commitment, skill and leadership earned him the title of Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year for North Queensland at the 2025 Queensland Training Awards. His story reflects the spirit of Apprenticeship Week – building skills, careers and futures.

Stephen’s journey shows that an apprenticeship can power communities and your future, too.
