Lachlan Wright is preparing for WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, where he will represent Australia as a Skillaroo in the Heavy Vehicle Technology category – making him one of the top apprentices in his trade in the world.
Lachlan’s trade journey started with a Year 10 career exploration activity at TAFE Queensland, where he tried his hand at various trades before settling on heavy automotive.
“I chose to pursue heavy automotive because of the variety and different challenges faced on a day-to-day basis,” Lachlan said.
Clearly having chosen the right path for him, Lachlan is now completing his apprenticeship and recognised as the best in the country at what he does, winning Gold at the 2025 WorldSkills Australia National Championships.
For Lachlan, trades offer a problem-solving element that many people don’t realise when choosing their career, and these are the parts of his job he flourishes in both at work and in competition.
“I’ve learnt that you must be flexible and able to adapt, you never know what might happen or what you’ll be doing next. I’ve also learnt that being organised and prepared helps greatly in succeeding with the tasks at hand.”
He also knows that a trade career offers endless opportunities for expanding skills and further learning, something he hopes he can pass on to young people considering their career choices.
“Beyond the competition, I want to continue to grow and improve as a mechanic, while also studying further as an Auto Electrician. I’d also like to help educate and encourage more young people to enter trades.”
National Skills Week in 2026 celebrates the impact of VET on individuals with its theme Life Changing, with Lachlan’s story a shining example of this at work.
