For Moranbah State High School student Ethan Clothier, vocational education is providing an opportunity to turn his passion for hands-on learning into a career in Queensland's resources industry.
An enthusiastic participant in workshops, trade camps and industry activities delivered by QMEA Resources Skills Academy, 17-year-old Ethan has embraced every opportunity to build the skills and knowledge needed to pursue an electrical apprenticeship in the mining industry after school.
"I like understanding how electrical systems and equipment work and being able to solve problems in a real-world environment," Ethan said.
“That interest led me to pursue a vocational pathway, as it suits my learning style and gives me the opportunity to build valuable skills while working towards a rewarding career.”
Through QMEA, Ethan has explored a range of careers in the resources sector, connected with industry professionals and gained valuable insight into the pathways available to young Queenslanders. The experiences reinforced his ambition to build a career as an electrician in one of the state's key industries.
"Through site visits, workshops and industry experiences, I've gained a much better understanding of what employers are looking for and the different pathways available. It has helped confirm that an electrical trade is the career I want to pursue," he said.
Ethan is encouraging other young people to consider vocational education and make the most of every opportunity available to them.
"A trade offers great opportunities to earn while you learn, develop valuable skills and build a long-term career,” he said.
“Take every opportunity to ask questions, get involved in programs like QMEA and gain as much experience as you can – it really helps you understand what's available and prepares you for the future.”
